![]() ![]() She had finished second in the 1975 Boston Marathon in a PR 2:51:37 behind Liane Winter's world-record 2:42:24. Remarkably, Switzer's Athens run was her first road marathon in 34 years. She had secretly hoped to match her 1967 Boston time, but didn't have a good day, and had to be content to finish a race that had denied her entry in 1972. Media Platforms Design TeamLast fall, Switzer, then 63, ran the Athens Marathon, celebrating the 2500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon, in 4:45. Lucky for Switzer, her boyfriend at the time was a national-class hammer thrower who had no trouble bulldozing Semple halfway back to Scotland. ![]() Switzer, secured an official race number (261) from BAA organizers who assumed her to be a him, and then was chased down by an enraged Jock Semple when Semple found her out in the early miles. The race was infamous because she entered as K.V. Switzer infamously ran the 1967 Boston Marathon in 4:20. (I don't claim my research is error-proof, so if you find someone else, please let me know.) This year the topic is: the fastest man and woman still standing who was also fast in a Boston Marathon during 1960s. (Joan Samuelson became the first woman member last fall after her superb Chicago effort.) Last year it was guys who have run a sub-3-hour marathon for five decades.
